Marietta is a city in Georgia, lying northwest of Atlanta. Close to leafy Marietta Square, an 1845 past cotton stockroom holds the Marietta Museum of History. Displays there put emphasis on local history. Not far from the Marietta Museum of History lies the Gone with the Wind Museum, celebrating the film and the Margaret Mitchell novel.
Just northwest of Marietta, trails line Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, location of an 1864 Civil War battle. This national battlefield park is where the Atlanta Campaign took place, and also contains Kennesaw Mountain. The name “Kennesaw” came from the Cherokee Indian “Gah-nee-sah”, which means “cemetery” or burial ground. Marietta is well known for its 69 acre water park Six Flags White Water. The park originally opened in 1984 as White Water Atlanta and later joined with the Six Flags Family of parks in 1999. One of Marietta’s most popular restaurants is The Big Chicken, which is a KFC restaurant featuring a 56 foot tall steel sided chicken rising up from the top of the building. The restaurant is located at the city’s biggest intersection of Roswell Road and Cobb Parkway. It is a well known attraction in the area.
