What Are the Standard Colors for Pavement Marking?

White and yellow are the most commonly used colors for pavement markings. Others colors are used too, but usually for more specific purposes.

The two most used colors serve the following purposes:

Yellow

Yellow lanes are mostly used to separate traffic traveling in opposite directions. Some examples of use are included below:
  • Solid Yellow Line- Passing is prohibited.

  • Broken Yellow Line- Indicates a passing zone, but the road is two way.

  • One Solid Yellow Line and One Broken Yellow Line- Traffic directly adjacent to the broken yellow line may switch to the next lane but traffic on the other side by the solid yellow line may not switch lanes.

  • Double Yellow Line (Both Solid)- Indicates that traffic from both directions should not be passing or switching lanes.

  • Yellow Boxes: Indicate parallel parking spaces.

  • Yellow Box with Slanted Lines: Aisle for handicapped parking spaces.
